Ik vind het volgende postulement wel een mooie voor het Ajax-Manchester United-topic.

@ Lieve MCH: Ik moest onlangs denken aan een fraai stukje Hollandse folklore dat ik graag met je wou delen. In de jaren negentig zongen fans van de FC Feyenoord (een Nederlandse voetbalclub) dikwijls het volgende:

"Ricardo Cruz/ is een van Loen/ een John van Loen van tien miljoen."

Voor de context, Cruz en Van Loen waren twee goed vergelijkbare spitsen van Feyenoord. Konden allebei aardig koppen, en waren ook best wel moelijk van de bal te zetten, maar 'm er dan ook echt een keertje inschieten was er vaak niet bij. Het belangrijkste verschil, zoals het rijmpje duidelijk maakt, was het prijskaartje.

Naar aanleiding van een wedstrijd van jouw club, toevallig tegen ditzelfde Feyenoord, vroeg ik me opeens het volgende af: Is Paul Pogba niet gewoon een hele dure Marouane Fellaini?

Ja, maar ik had graag de MCH willen provoceren: RH of ND, zou je de MCH - in de rouw na de wedstrijd tegen Watford - er attent op willen maken dat hij op het moment op het Florum geprovoceerd en getreiterd wordt?

Overigens, de overwinning van Feyenoord op de B-selectie van Manchester wordt wel een tikkeltje ontsierd door het feit dat de A-selectie vandaag nog harder onderuit gaat tegen een cluppie uit een wel heel treurige voorstad van Londen.

Fraai postulement idd, Bode! MCH is ingelicht. Bovendien kan hij tegen een stootje, want hij heeft net - zoals het een MCH betaamt - promotie gemaakt!

In response to the question: no, Pogba is not an expensive Fellaini. And I appreciate that the playfully ironic nature of the question.
By all means laugh at Manchester United (and English clubs in general) they have so much money and are so lacking in common sense that they see the solution to any problem as being to throw money at it.

The problem we have is that the team is unbalanced at the moment. Pogba is undoubtedly an excellent player but he's not the player we really needed. That was a dominating defensive midfielder (a 25-yr-old Roy Keane if you like). The problem is that we can't find one, and sadly Fellaini 's been pushed into this role, with predictably poor results... As you've seen money is not an object, so we bought the most expensive midfielder we could find. We also need to get rid of Rooney who's become an expensive waste of space.

Mourinho of course knows this, but mindful of what happened when he side-lined Raúl and then Casillas at Madrid. Rooney's media profile (and his commercial importance as an icon in China or Christ knows where) means he can't do to him what he's done to Schweinsteiger (who's been made a kind of non-person at the club). This is unfortunate and I hate myself for writing this. The "political" and showbiz element to modern football is disgraceful. The marketing shysters have taken over...

Ik ben altijd erg gefascineerd geweest door de hype rondom het fenomeen Rooney. Hij werd uitgeroepen tot Boy wonder en de witte Pele, en zou Engeland (dat op papier toen een erg sterk team had) wel even wereldkampioen maken in 2006. Eerlijke vraag, MCH: geloofde jij daar toen zelf in? En is de teleurstelling over het feit dat hij het niet heeft waargemaakt niet een deel van de reden dat je nu zo graag van hem af wilt?

The reason I (and I think the overwhelming majority of Man Utd fans) want rid of him now is because he’s not worthy of a place in the team. But yes you’re right there’s also disappointment with him because he has so clearly failed to make the most of his potential. He also asked for a transfer in 2010, after which there were rumours his agent was talking to Man City. This led to United fans painting “sign for City and you’re dead” on his house. He got a new improved contract with United after that but his relationship with most fans never recovered.

He’s about the same age as C. Ronaldo and joined the club at the same time. Rooney, however, was seen as the greater talent back then. In retrospect this seems ridiculous but that’s how it was. So comparisons are still naturally drawn between the two: Rooney is seen as lazy for not making the most of himself the way Ronaldo has. He’s also known to hate going to the gym and likes his beer and chips.

He was also never quite consistent enough to nail down a single position, what this meant was when he was playing No 9 and he had a few bad games people said he should be No 10, and vice versa. Ferguson tried to make him into a rounded player able to operate behind another striker or off either wing. In retrospect he should have stayed a No 9. When United signed van Persie they probably should have sold Rooney.

Rooney was a talented player with a few glaring flaws in his game - like Stephen Gerrard he had no tactical disciple and tended to run around like a madman. Like Gerrard, he was able to come up with a few moments of magic that made people forget the fact that he essentially doesn’t know how to play football (which is why he never made a convincing playmaker). Like with Gerrard, now his legs are gone he’s no use to anyone.

BTW I don’t know who came up with “the white Pele” as a nickname but I think it sounds stupid and borderline racist.

Ik herinner me nog dat na 1990 een Engelse neef me vertelde dat Gascoigne nu al net zo goed was als Cruijff. Toen hij me later vertelde dat Rooney de nieuwe Maradona was beweerde dat dat over Gascoigne destijds een grap was.

En even voor de duidelijkheid, Domme, Domme Donald heeft korte vingers, geen dikke vingers.

Even een stukje feedback, lieve MCH, gewoon, omdat ik niet wil dat je denkt dat ik je vergeten ben: ben je nog steeds van mening dat Pogba geen duurdere editie van Fellaini is?

No I still don't think that. The team yesterday was a shambles, and you can’t blame everything on Pogba, although the game obviously passed him by. He showed in Amsterdam the other week what a good player he is.

The same problems remain from last season - the defence is weak in the middle and the midfield is both unbalanced by this and unable to compensate for it. Pogba needs someone to release him from defensive duties, which he’s unwilling or unable to carry out. The experiment of playing Herrera and Fellaini behind Pogba worked against Liverpool (although in playing so defensively we weren’t going to create many chances) but not yesterday. Moreover Fellaini can’t be relied upon to keep the ball or use it intelligently. Unfortunately the alternatives to him as a defensive midfielder aren’t particularly inspiring - I’d play Carrick I think but he’s 35 and Mourinho wants someone a bit more physical (he likes a “robocop” style defensive midfielder). This also goes some way to explaining Schweinsteiger being side-lined.

Yesterday was a catastrophe. United’s problems go far deeper than Pogba. As further weak points I’d point to Smalling at the back, and a lack of penetration down the wings. Martial was excellent on the left last season but has lost all semblance of form.

So in short, no not an expensive Fellaini; rather a luxury we can’t currently afford (in tactical terms).

Any game played in Amsterdam from a team outside of the netherlands isn't actually a valid measurement of how good/bad a player is. It's the same thing as saying that Pogba looked great against Hartlepool United...

Laat me een weddenschap met je aangaan, lieve MCH. Ik zeg dat Fellaini het bij Man U langer vol gaat houden dan zowel Pogba als Mourinho.

En Tim heeft gelijk: naieve Floracieten (niet Tim, die het vermogen heeft om de toekomst te zien, maar wel ondergetekende) hebben na een bepaalde wedstrijd gedacht dat Memphis Depay wel eens een hele grote zou kunnen worden. Waar we even geen rekening mee hielden: de wedstrijd was in (en tegen) Brugge.

Fellaini's contract is up at the end of the season, and hasn't been offered a new one. Mind you he's outlived 2 managers so far and is still in the team so who knows? If Mourinho can't get them into the Champs League he's off at the end of the season and so, I suppose, will be Pogba.

I'll bet you a beer but nothing more expensive than that...

United would have to finish above three of Liverpool, City, Arse, Chels and Spurs, two of which they’ve lost to already. I think they will, but I wouldn’t wager too much on it.

PS they'd have to finish above 2 of them actually, but Mouniho could well get the bullet if they finish 4th (van Gaal would still have been sacked apparently if they'd finished 4th rather than 5th last season)

De MCH is nerveus, en durft niet meer dan een biertje in te zetten. Misschien iets om eens goed van te profiteren.

Tenzij het natuurlijk een valstrik is. Dat de Bak al in de sterren gewicheld heeft dat Man U kampioen wordt, en dit heeft doorgespeeld aan de MCH.

Dit is dus gewoon om het even te zeggen: Burnley. Je verstaat het goed: Burnley.

Beetje een ongelukkige wedstrijd voor Paul Pogba vandaag, maar gelukkig had 'de Beffoindre/Smokin' Joe' Marouane Fellaini nog achter de hand.
