In my last update I said that April was a roaring month, how little did I know at that time. Its has been a week now since I ended up in the hospital after a concussion . Or at least thats what the doctors thought, they werent completely sure. I cant seem to remember it either. Im hoping in time everything will come back to me. But lets take a few steps back and Ill try to explain what happened. Im rushing straight into things now and thats difficult to follow.
A lot of things happened since my last update. Let me just start where I left off. The second half of May was pretty much taken up by doing assignments and essays . I discovered an interesting phenomenon, the more I wrote in English the more difficult it became. Wait a second, the more I write the harder it gets? That seems to be a bit illogically. Actually the answer was quite simple . When writing in English became pretty straightforward for me I started searching for better words to express my thoughts. I tried to get my thoughts in writing exactly the way I wanted them. And when youre more familiar with the language, you have more options to choose from. This demanded more thinking and slowed the writing process. I believe my essays have improved immensely since then. Writing in academic English was much different from what I had expected, nothing like the normal English that I mastered before I got here .
At the end of May it was time for me to get new contacts so I went to the Victorian Optometry Clinic expecting just a regular check, taking only a few mins. However the nice people there had something else for me in mind. Since I never had a check in Australia before, they decided it would be a good idea to give me the full treatment. Wanting only the best for my eyes I decided to go along. Well the full treatment turned out to be a two-hour eye examination! In the end I even got to try on different types of lenses and I got to test a pair for a week to see if I liked them. When I returned after a week they tested how my eyes reacted to the lenses and from those findings they selected the right type of lenses for me. Best of all everything was free of charge and I got a nice student discount on the lenses, so now Im wearing one of the best contact lenses available for less than I would have paid in Holland.
Unfortunately my improved eyesight didnt guarantee a goal in the next soccer match which we lost by 5 nil (ouch ). Oh well at least PSV won the Dutch league! Some other things I did in May: walking the Golden Mile with Linda, visiting the Melbourne Museum and seeing the Matrix Reloaded.
While I got rejected entry to a bar before because I didnt have an Australian ID, in May I got rejected because I wore runners (hardloopschoenen) when I wanted to enter some up-class bar . Oh well, there were enough other bars there that did let me in regardless of my type of shoes.
And then it was Sunday the 1st of June, a lovely day to play a soccer match or perform any other outdoor activity . And that is exactly what I did, I played a soccer match. But its what happened after the match that made this day a really bad day for me. After the match I went home and I was later told that my housemates decided to take me to the hospital because I was acting really strange. I was asking what day it was over and over again and walking from my room to the kitchen and bank in what seemed to be an endless loop. To make a long story short I cannot remember anything that happened in the twelve hours starting with the second half of the match. I couldnt remember what position I played, what the score was or how I got home. And in the hospital I kept forgetting everything the doctors told me: try to remember this, its important. It was a really weird experience, its bad enough when one part of your body cant do anything (remember my broken leg?) but its much worse when your head decides to seriously malfunction. They did all kinds of tests on me in the hospital which made me feel like a guinea pig . Presumably the doctors did these tests (240 kb) on me to make sure that I didnt use any drugs or medicines, but Im suspecting that they just did it to have a little fun with the Dutch patient.
I didnt do any drugs before I entered the hospital but I sure looked like a crack junky when I left it (especially my left arm was molested). Not that I cared much about this because I still had to cope with a head splitting migraine for the next 5(!) days. On Thursday (5th June) when my head was particularly fine for a change I had to go to the hospital again for an EEG-scan, a test where they measure your brainwaves (EEG stands for electroencephalography). They put two dozen sensors on your head and make you do maths, look into a stroboscope and hyperventilate while they measure your brainwaves for 25 minutes (photos should be up soon ). After this test my headache was back in full force .
Almost a week after the incident now my head feels pretty normal, sometimes I have a small headache but nothing that compares to the ones I had early this week. Lucky for me, listening to "All 20 Soaked" (Alle 20 Kletsnat) under my blankets made life a little easier for me.
Im at the computer now earlier then I should be because lying in bed got really boring. The scary thing of this event is that when I spoke to my coach and some of my team-mates they couldnt recollect that I fell hard on the ground or that I got hit by something . According to them nothing happened and I was just fine, making jokes after the game in the dressing room. Then I thought that something might have happened when I drove back home from the game, but in Australia bikers wear a helmet and I checked it and my bike and everything was fine no damage or anything . It seems like the only thing that got any damage was my brain, really really weird. And for you guys that say that I probably drunk too much on Saturday I have to deny that, I went home early because I had to play soccer the next day and I woke up without a hangover. Oh well, this week was a week that I would love to forget. I'm finalising my holiday plans next week so at least I'm having something to look forward to except from the exams.
